Today’s Office of National Statistics (ONS) retail sales for December reveal Black Friday deals tempted shoppers to spend more in November than December. Overall retail sales slumped 1.5 per cent in December 2017 compared to the previous month and only continued year-on-year growth in online sales prevented an even bigger decline.
Online parcel booking price comparison site ParcelCompare says it was booming internet sales that saved December from being a disaster for some leading High Street brands.
David Jinks, head of consumer research, comments: “High Street brands with a strong online offering bucked the trend. High Street spending slumped against the previous month but many brands continued to increase their online sales, with strong year-on-year growth’ across all sectors.”
But it wasn’t all bad news. Fashion and footwear stores, in particular, increased their online sales by 20.9 per cent, followed closely by household goods stores with a growth of 17 per cent.
Jinks adds: “Internet sales for retailers with a multichannel approach to sales (including high street and supermarkets) provided the largest positive contribution to overall online growth at 7.5 per cent.”
